19-22 July 2014.
This was my fourth visit to Yuncheng, Kiko’s hometown. The first was in 2009 after his captivity, then in 2011 with Paco to explain to his family his going to Spain for formation, and last year to grieve with them over his passing away and console them, and now to commemorate with them the first year of his going home to the Father’s heart.
We were welcomed by Kiko’s family as part of their family. Like in our previous visit, we were housed in the hotel of their cousin, also a Catholic, but we went to his parents’ home for meals. They were still mourning for him, but somehow after a year, there has been some healing though his mother said she would need two years to grieve.
I had thought at first that we would commemorate his first year anniversary privately with the celebration of the mass at home. But on 21 July, we all went to the parish church for the mass. There used to be a big church where Kiko served as an altar boy, but that church was demolished in 2011 to give way to the construction of the high speed railway, which was inaugurated last 1 July. Now a box prefab building serves as the parish chapel.
